An advertising specialist thought up this catch phrase for our children's home, the RIE: "Our work is not a hobby". It seemed to us a rather aggressive slogan. But it's quite true that we are not playing games. We aim to provide significant help in serious problem situations. We have a responsibility to say Yes, when our reply should be affirmative, or to say No, when our response should be negative. What are the deciding factors? Our response is Yes for parents who want to look after their children properly, but who really are unable to do so. We seek confirmation that, for a period of time, they need our assistance. However, in some cases, the reply is No, because there are facilities more suitable than ours (for particular circumstances, age groups or special needs requiring specialized care). These are cases which would also affect the normal atmosphere of our Home. We need to be sure that the RIE represents the appropriate facility in every case. And we are pleased when we can provide adequate help for children like this new little boy and, indirectly, for his mother. The work we do is not a hobby. It is a serious effort to provide constructive help. We are grateful for your involvement. |
